Meet the Team

The Online @ BSE team consists of an intergenerational and interdisciplinary group of researchers and experts committed to exploring the possibilities of online and hybrid learning.

Glynda Hull, PhD

Faculty Director

Dr. Glynda Hull is a professor of Education and holds the Elizabeth H. and Eugene A. Shurtleff Chair in Undergraduate Education. She also currently serves as Associate Dean in the School of Education. A recipient of UC Berkeley’s Distinguished Teaching Award, Hull offers undergraduate, graduate, and teacher education courses on literacy and media, and her research focuses on improving K-12 education with a focus on literacy, language, and technology.

José Ramón Lizárraga, PhD

Visiting Researcher/Project Manager

Dr. José Ramón Lizárraga is a multiple Webby Award-winning designer and research of online experiences.  José is a Visiting Researcher and Project Manager of O @ BSE, leading all design, implementation, and research efforts. Dr. Lizárraga is an award-winning designer of online/hybrid learning environments whose internationally-recognized scholarly work focuses on role of emergent technologies, AI, and media in the learning of individuals and communities.  

Adrienne Herd, EdD

Coordinator Public Programs

Dr. Adrienne Herd is a veteran educator, administrator, researcher, credentialed teacher, and recognized leader in the expanded learning field. A recipient of the California Department of Education’s Expanded Learning Division’s  Visionary Leadership Award, she has led the design, implementation and evaluation of multiple cohorts of public, private, and charter schools’ expanded learning programs. She has also led fund development efforts leading to additional funding and resources for innovative programs for underserved populations across the K-18 pipeline. Her current interests are in building the capacity of higher education institutions to creatively address the shortage of educators and youth development workers in California and beyond.

Krystal Anderson

Graduate Student Researcher

Krystal Anderson is a veteran special education teacher that is passionate in serving children with disabilities. She is a doctoral student in the Berkeley School of Education who will serve as Graduate Student Researcher and an Early Childhood Education Expert.

Meg Everett

Graduate Student Researcher / Immersive Virtual Classroom

Meg Everett is a doctoral student in the Berkeley School of Education and recipient of the Learning Sciences Certificate in Instructional Design, Learning Technologies, and Education Research. In addition to serving as a graduate student researcher on the project, she coordinates implementation and research efforts of the Immersive Virtual Classroom.

Ashieda McKoy

Visiting Graduate Student Researcher / Research Analyst

Ashieda  is a doctoral candidate in the School of Education at University of Colorado Boulder. With an emphasis on Learning Sciences and Human Development and Teacher Learning, Research, and Practice, Ashieda is particularly interested in designing teacher learning environments using an Afrofuturist lens. At O @ BSE, Ashieda will bring their expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our work developing innovative online/hybrid learning. 

Nevin Bangloy

Undergraduate Student Research Assistant, Immersive Virtual Classroom

Nevin is a data science major with a domain emphasis in data arts and humanities. His interests lie in human-computer interaction and human-centered design. He has a background in cognitive psychology research, product development, and user experience. Nevin seeks to improve accessibility in digital spaces and hopes to explore how technology can better represent the diversity of human experiences in our increasingly digital world.

Kelsey Choe

Undergraduate Student Research Assistant, Immersive Virtual Classroom

Kelsey is a media studies major with a concentration in digital media and an STS minor. She is interested in the human contexts of data and computing, as shown through her involvement in cultural analytics for machine learning and digital pedagogy research at Berkeley. Kelsey hopes to work on creative technological solutions for learning, toward a future where technology skills are accessible and justly implemented. 

Sebastien Marie

Undergraduate Student Research Assistant

Sebastien Marie is an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley majoring in Sociology. His passion for pedagogy and online learning stems from his experience as a private guitar instructor. He serves as the project's module design specialist and assists in our research efforts. 

Ngan Pham

Undergraduate Student Research Assistant

Ngan Pham is a second-year transfer student at UC Berkeley pursuing an Education Science major. Growing up in a working-class family in Vietnam and being a recent immigrant and first-generation college student, Ngan deeply understands the transformativeness and importance of education. Therefore, she is dedicated to increasing educational access to marginalized students and optimizing their learning experience and outcomes, which lead her to join the O @ BSE team. 

Devanshi Unadkat, PhD

Visiting Researcher

Dr. Devanshi Unadkat  is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at the University of San Francisco. Her research focuses on the use of technologies as tools for learning in various contexts with a focus on inclusive education. She has taught several courses in various departments at Santa Rosa Junior College, San Francisco State University, and UC Berkeley. Dr. Unadkat taught preschool through second grade classrooms in the US and India and was a Prek-12 special educator. She serves as a Visiting Researcher and Early Childhood Education expert on the O @ BSE Team. 

Sophia Sobko, PhD

Visiting Researcher / Senior Consultant

Dr. Sophia Sobko's work brings together research, pedagogy, art practice, and community organizing in the pursuit of justice and collective liberation. They write on topics of Soviet Jewish diaspora from a decolonial and critical race perspective. In past years, they have taught, developed curriculum, and managed arts programs for The Museum of Photographic Arts and The AjA Project, and taught high school English at Mission High School (SFUSD). At O @ BSE, Sophia will lead efforts in developing innovative curriculum for the professional development of Expanded Learning and Afterschool Educators.
